The Spinte (Spin mill)

After the harvest in autumn the young, unmarried girls of the villages met in the spinning-rooms in the evening to produce their own dresses in hand and with much industriousness. They were talking and singing here of course. The spinning-room old ones, that one of "kantorka" rehearsed also Sorbian hymns, with the girls at this time for the time of the Shrovetide and Easter. As for the rest the young men of the village here did not have any access. Only on particular days they were allowed to enter the spinning-room.

Bird wedding

Origin of this celebration of the birds is, the legend this one the magpie had married the raven on this day and all birds were invited to this celebration to consequence. The children feed the birds with grains in winter and are rewarded by these for this with sweets and pastries in January.

The low mild seat becomes celebratedly this celebration of the children to the nursery schools and schools. The girl as a magpie and they put the wedding procession after and go through the village, dressed up as a raven (the boy in the black suit with top-hat) and as bird guests (children with being sticky beaks and outfits covered), (into low Sorbian special day dress).

Zampern

Takes place before the Shrovetide, called the mongrels, also demanding gang. The covered village youth walks from house to house on this day and gives a serenade on every stop.

For this they get eggs, bacon or money. In the evening everything is consumed in a common round. Nowadays is for the highly imaginative outfits no limits set. The figures of that custom shall ban the dark winter, keep dangers and demons away from the village and welcome the fertile time of the spring.

Shrovetide

Couples costumes for CarnivalThe custom which is best known and celebrated in most villages is the Shrovetide. After the wintry work on the spinning wheels in the spin mill was finished, the Shrovetide was the highlight of the end.

This custom ended the time between harvest and seed. The Shrove Tuesday procession takes place on a Saturday or Sunday (January, February also by the middle of March). The men wear suit, tie and sometimes hat, the girls have the special day dress on. The real move after a talk and a photo session follows. The couples pull by the village now, accompanied by a band. They special villagers receive an honour visit, the Zapuststräußchen (bouquet of flowers) is put on and a lap of honour is danced.

The so honoured person thanks the move couples with coffee and cake. Such a tour of the village can already last for some hours. The move usually starts around 13.30 with clock and ends only in the evening toward 18.00 clock in the inn. Then it gets full here and the dance starts. For also that is the chapel an exhausting day.
