The daily life in the Spreewald

Postcard from 1936: Spree Forest FarmersThe modern age did not stop ahaed of the Spreewald. With building the road network the small boats of the spreewald as a means of transportation disappeared from the Spreewald. One is seldom lucky to see a real farmer with the small boat at the transport of hay, cucumbers or cattle. The bigggest chance to see that private small boat you have in Lehde or Leipe.

Working with the small boat

Postcard from 1905: livestock transport in the Spreewald

The rural life used to emboss the view. Grass, hay, the vegetable crop and the cattle were transported with the small boat. The fisherman's small boat is the smallest under the small boats one. For the transport of cattle the "ox small boat" was the most ideal and biggest small boat.

The small boat serves mainly for the tourist promotion today. One can watch even the post woman and the refuse collection in the area around Leipe on the water unless in the winter months. Leipe was attainable up to the making of the dam street only on the water in the year 1968. The harvest still is also driven home by some smallholders by small boat; if also no longer so exclusive, like some years ago. So the small boat is still indispensable in the Spreewald now, too.

For work knowledge is think after not gone by small boat any more. Because most jobs are in the larger towns, where one comes by car or bus better.

Post by small boat

Women on the Post KahnThe post signs out Mrs Jutta Pudenz, this is unique in Germany, in the under monument protection place Lehde from April until October. She is doing this work since 17 years.
Her tour is up the flow on about eight kilometres. Eighty households receive the post and packets.

Mrs Pudenz and her small boat are a popular photo motive for guests of the Spreewald.

Living in a house of the Spreewald

Spreewald house with a roofWho is lucky to live in a typical Spreewald house also carries any amount responsibility for the mostly under monument protection block Bohlen house with the thatched roof. There is again and again to do what at you. The reed must be cleaned by moss and lichens packed down, filled up again, the surface.

What cheaply grew once in front of the front door must be bought expensively today. Rounds 30 000 euro costs the new one cover of a residential building. Private monument owners can apply to the preservation of historical monuments for supports. But the funds are limited. And 15 roofs can be promoted in whole Brandenburg just per annum so.

After 1900 more and more houses were built from stone after a municipal example. One sees typical Spreewald in Leipe, Lehde and Burg. Burg is the greatest scattered settlement of Germany. About 650 court places gave here once.

For the Burger scattered settlement even a planning primer was completed in the year 2003. It contains structural and scenic development suggestions as well as legal specifications for the construction and receipt of a typical court plant.
