Information
The largest church is the low mild seat you. The architectural history reaches back, to up to the early Middle Ages. A first mention is known of 1156. Nikolai is the protection saint of the seafarers and merchants. The real ground plan of the church was smaller than today's making. This dates from the beginning of the 15th century. After several fires within the years 1468, at 1600 and in the Second World War the building got some changes.
At the admission to the church you have an undisguised view of the richly ornamented altar. It builds 1661, is a work of art made of sandstone, alabaster figures and wood carvings. The oval in the middle of the altar shows Jesus Christi the resurrection, on the right and on the left besides this the crucifixion and the burial. The sacred Holy Communion is shown directly under the oval. You are seeing the Ascension Day in the top over the oval knowledge. If you stand in front of the altar and look in the direction of the entrance again, the powerful organ sits enthroned over the heads of the churchgoers. One, an imposing instrument...almost has it the appearance as if it would carry the "roof" of the church.
A climbing of the 55 metres high church steeple is also worthwhile. A view of Cottbus with the Wendish quarter and the old town with the old market expects you in airy height.
